FE Civil vs. PE Civil: What's the Difference?
These are two separate exams, taken years apart, testing different things. If you're early in your engineering career it's easy to conflate them — here's exactly how they differ and how they connect.

FE Civil: the fundamentals gate
The FE Civil exam is usually the first licensure step, typically taken during senior year or shortly after graduating. It covers all fourteen civil knowledge areas broadly — statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, materials, structural engineering, geotechnical, water resources and environmental engineering, transportation, construction engineering, surveying, engineering economics, ethics, and math and stats — without requiring deep specialization in any one of them. Passing gets you Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Engineering Intern (EI) status, depending on your state.

PE Civil: the licensure exam
The PE Civil exam comes later — after roughly four years of qualifying work experience under a licensed PE. Unlike the FE, it's not broad: you pick one of five civil sub-disciplines (Construction, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation, or Water Resources and Environmental) and the exam goes deep into that specific practice area, including realistic, scenario-based problems closer to what you'd actually encounter on the job. Passing it — combined with the experience and reference requirements your state board sets — gets you a Professional Engineer (PE) license, which is what legally lets you stamp and seal engineering documents in most U.S. states.
Because it's discipline-specific and scenario-heavy, PE prep looks different from FE prep: less "cover twelve broad subjects," more "get fast and confident inside one narrow, deep specialty."
Do you need to pass the FE before the PE?
In nearly every U.S. state, yes — the FE is a prerequisite. It's the standard on-ramp: pass the FE, log your qualifying work experience, then sit for the PE in your chosen discipline. A small number of paths allow experienced engineers to skip the FE with enough verified work history, but that's the exception, not the norm, and varies by state board.
Which one should you be studying for right now?
- Still in school, or graduated in the last year or two, no PE-qualifying experience yet? You're studying for the FE.
